    Eating Less To Loose Weight
Being a dietetic student, I frequently get asked one question,"How can I eat less?"

I decided to put together several useful ideas on how to reduce your portion sizes and possibly loose weight.

    1. Drink plenty of water. Everybody says it but so few actually do it. I found it easier to drink more if you set a realistic goal. For example, go out and buy a 1.5 or a 2 liter bottle of water. Refill it and set a goal to drink one whole bottle of water a day.

    2. Eat healthy snacks in between the meals.
Go out and buy a healthy snack bar with a minimum sugar added. Also, a bag of grapes or baby carrots is an excellent snack as well.

    3. Eat slower, chew food thoroughly. It takes ~15 minutes for us to feel full. By chewing your food and eating slower you will feel full faster.

    4. Reduce your portion size. If you get a large sandwich you feel obligated to finish it unless you absolutely stuffed. The goal here is to feel satisfied and full, not stuffed to the point of having your top pants button undone.

    5. Eat low glycemic index (GI) foods. Or at least mix low and high glycemic index foods together for a better effect. Your blood sugar doesn’t rise as fast and therefore doest fall as fast either-> you do not feel hungry for a longer period of time. For list of low and high GI foods click here. Try these tips, they work!

    Happy Eating,

    Sunscreen it UP!
    Thursday
    Sunscreen it UP
I previously wrote on the importance of a good sunscreen.

Man or woman, it is essential to add an SPF to your daily routine.Sunscreen was originally developed by U.S. Navy during WWII for the sailors. The original sunscreen only protected against UVB rays.

Today we are not only protected against UVB rays but also against UVA- which penetrate deeper into the skin and cause wrinkles.

Helioplex and Mexoryl are two chemicals which offer UVA protection. Products to buy:Helioplex - Neutrogena and all Aveeno suncareMexoryl- some L'Oreal

For you that do not want to use many chemicals on your skin, make sure to at least look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These are natural minerals that offer protection against UVB as well as UVA.

    SPF 15 or SPF 30?

SPF 15 protects against 93% of sun exposure and SPF 30 protects against 97%. I recommend getting SPF 30 just to be sure you're protected. Apply before going out even on a cloudy day and remember that chemicals in sunscreen break down often, so reapply every two hours (Dap, dap, dap)

    See ya soon ;)

Getting Fit Even with a Student Lifestyle

Getting Fit Even with a Student Lifestyle
Getting Fit Even with a Student LifestyleHello Friends,

There are plenty of good reasons for not being active as a college student. I mean, with a full schedule, clubs, and work on top of that, it seems like it's impossible to squeeze exercise in our busy lives.

Besides even if you did plan to go to the gym before you left the house, by the time the day is over you don't feel like doing anything but taking a nap. I know the feeling, so here are some useful tips on how to fit activity into busy day with low budget.

Aerobic activity burns calories, reduces body fat, and gives you more energy.

    How to fit:

    - Cut back on TV watching by 15%, use the time to move (even if it's doing dishes or cleaning your car)

    - Take a short 10 minute walk before you sit down to study. It amazes me how little time we spend outside these days. Go out there, it's beautiful!

    - Take stairs instead of elevators wherever you go. Elevators take forever anyway.

    - Bring study materials while you ride a stationary bike or use Stairmaster

    - When walking, listen to a recording of your lecture or a book- Take a study break and turn on your favorite music. Move in place.

    - During commercials, stand up and do some brief activity

    - Organize your books so you don't have to carry as much stuff and park far away. Walking is a simple way to get fit.

Exercise is a good stress reliever and it's addicting!

Once you start being active you will feel more energized and feel better about yourself. One thing I did notice is that people tend to actually have less energy in their first week of being active. It is normal, your body is adjusting to a new healthier you.

    See you soon,

Useful tips for a radiant looking skin

    1. Protect your skin from the direct sun.

Don't forget to use moisturizer with at least SPF15 and use a much stronger sun screen when at the beach. Sun causes spots to appear, and it is hard to get rid of them later on. And even that is nothing compare to the web of wrinkles that might appear in a middle aged women in return to her love for a good tan.

    2. Don't use soap on your face. Soap washes away the natural oils that causes oily skin to be even more oily. Use a gentle face wash.

    3. Don't smoke. Nothing damages skin more than cigarette smoke. Skin will look dull and you will need to use quite a layer of make up to brighten up your skin tone.

    4. Wash away your make-up with a special gentle cream that doesn't damage fragile skin around the eyes. Try to wash your eye area with a light circular motion.

    5. Keep your skin moisturized.

    Stay beautiful :)

    KK

    Small and Healthy Snacks
    Small and Healthy Snacks
I have many people coming to me for advice on a healthy snack. So here are some of my personal favorites:

    1. Grapes. Take a small zip baggy with you to work and keep it on your desk. Grapes are mostly waterand will keep you full while still being so yummy! Try freezing grapes for a refreshing sweet taste.

    2. Yogurt with cereal or granola. In a small baggy put a little bit of granola or your favorite cereal. When at work, home or school, mix granola into the yogurt and enjoy this tasty and filling snack.

    3. Instead of coffee try making a black tea with milk and then refrigerate it. Add sugar and you will have a delicious drink without so much caffeine. It will save you several dollars too. If you are not a tea drinker you can do the same thing with coffee (but in your own house). Brew coffee, add milk and sugar and put it in the fridge.

    4. Cut up any fruit or vegetables and bring it with you to work/school.To prevent browning sprinkle some sugar or lemon juice on top of your veggies or fruits.

    Yours,
    KK
