Being a dietetic student, I frequently get asked one question,"How can I eat less?"
I decided to put together several useful ideas on how to reduce your portion sizes and possibly loose weight.
1. Drink plenty of water. Everybody says it but so few actually do it. I found it easier to drink more if you set a realistic goal. For example, go out and buy a 1.5 or a 2 liter bottle of water. Refill it and set a goal to drink one whole bottle of water a day.
2. Eat healthy snacks in between the meals. Go out and buy a healthy snack bar with a minimum sugar added. Also, a bag of grapes or baby carrots is an excellent snack as well.
3. Eat slower, chew food thoroughly. It takes ~15 minutes for us to feel full. By chewing your food and eating slower you will feel full faster.
4. Reduce your portion size. If you get a large sandwich you feel obligated to finish it unless you absolutely stuffed. The goal here is to feel satisfied and full, not stuffed to the point of having your top pants button undone.
5. Eat low glycemic index (GI) foods. Or at least mix low and high glycemic index foods together for a better effect. Your blood sugar doesn’t rise as fast and therefore doest fall as fast either-> you do not feel hungry for a longer period of time. For list of low and high GI foods click here. Try these tips, they work!
