  • Benefits of having a .edu email address

    Big Figs,

There are many benefits to having your email address which is given to you by your school. This type of email address is referred to as a .edu email account. Many students may not use their .edu email, or perhaps they don't even realize that they've been assigned one?!

One example is Lufthansa's Generation Fly program. Lufthansa has deeply discounted fares for college students. To receive the discounts, you have to provide a .edu email address as proof that you are in college. Also, you can't cheat and just make up an address, or use some old college email address that you are not authorized to use -- because they will send an email to your .edu email address ... which you must then retrieve and follow the instructions to verify your identity.

Other examples of student benefits and discounts from having a .edu email address include:

Movies, train tickets, bus tickets, and the list goes on and on ...

Many places will simply ask for your student ID card. However, some will ask you to register online; and as part of their verification process, you will need to type in your .edu email address.

Some colleges let you use your .edu email account for a period of time after graduation; and many graduate programs often give you unlimited access to your email after graduation. Either way, your .edu benefits need not disappear on graduation day. Check with your college's IT administrator (or else the college's PC technical support) to find out how long you can benefit from your email address.

If nothing else, it doesn't hurt to ask if there is a discount available for students (e.g. when buying a train ticket, movie tickets, etc). If you are standing in line, or buying the tickets in person, you will most likely be asked to present your valid student ID. However, if you are buying online, you may be asked to type in an active .edu email address.

There are many more benefits and discounts available to students that are well beyond the scope of this little article -- but, as a college student, I recommend that you check into the myriad of advantages that come with .edu email ownership!
